MOT Insurance

Every vehicle must have an MOT test and therefore MOT insurance is something to consider.  If the vehicle fails you are given 14 days to fix any issues with the vehicle and have it tested again.  The repairs required to pass MOT testing can be expensive.  If you would rather not have to pay out for the repairs to pass testing there is a MOT failure insurance option.  This option covers certain repairs needed to pass the testing process.

Coverage can take care of lighting and electrical issues, steering, suspension, braking systems, fuel systems, and seating and security.  Not all components of the vehicle will be covered.  For example damage to headlights caused by impact, accident, or vandalism is not included in the MOT failure insurance.

As an insurance policy there are some important notes you should know about the MOT failure insurance and what it will cover.  By understanding these terms and conditions you can find out if the insurance is right for you.

• The insurance will cover the necessary repairs to the vehicle when a certified garage does the work and the claim can be proven.
• Insurance for MOT testing does not cover car hire vehicles.
• The insurance cannot be transferred to another party.
• Repairs must be completed within 30 days of the MOT testing due date.
• You must have 90 days of your current MOT remaining before purchasing the insurance.  In other words you cannot obtain the insurance after the test is up or the car has failed the new test.
• Any claim that you have will not cover the first 20 pounds.
• Components must be listed in the “what is covered” section of the policy you purchase in order for them to be repaired for the MOT testing.
• Damage that is caused by defects or accidents will not be fixed under the MOT failure insurance.
• Vehicle structure is not covered.

MOT failure insurance has been formed in order to help you get through the testing process spending a great deal out of pocket.  MOT testing cannot be avoided, and if you know your vehicle will fail or could fail having the insurance is imperative.  However, you must keep in mind the MOT test it went through the last time must still be in effect.
MOT insurance is only going to cover a vehicle that has had 90 days or more before the current certification is up.  Premiums will range depending on who will cover you and what coverage you have.  Most policies are similar in what they agree to cover.

Also note that any vehicle damage caused by vandalism, accident, or theft will not be covered regardless of when the issue occurred.  You are responsible for using your other car insurance for the aforementioned issues.  Regular car insurance covers accidental damage, theft, or vandalism.  MOT insurance is very specific as an insurance.  It is worth having as you get ready for your MOT test just in case something is not up to the code the test requires.
